Description

OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE

In 1967, the enduring collaboration between Austin and the Donald Healey Motor Company, known as Austin-Healey, reached its conclusion after a fruitful 15 year tenure. With newfound freedom to pursue his automotive visions, Healey embarked on crafting a new sports car to be assembled by Jensen Motors in West Bromwich, England. The Jensen-Healey as it would become known, used a unitary body along with steering and suspension components from Vauxhall, brakes from Triumph, and a four-speed transmission from Sunbeam. A number of engine suppliers were considered before Colin Chapman of Lotus volunteered his new Type 907 twin-cam inline-four engine similar to the unit used in the Lotus Elite. These elements came together to form a potent package for the period, with the 2.0-liter Lotus engine delivering 145 horsepower while the Triumph TR6 only offered 105 and the MG MGB just 80. It also looked unlike any other British roadster of the day, through its absence of a front grille and its prominent front bumper. Despite being faster and prettier than its competitors, the Jensen-Healey's relatively expensive $4,795 price tag meant that just over 10,500 were produced in total, making them rare and collectible classic British roadsters today.
