Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
After six years of production from 1969 to 1975, Citroën built just 12,920 examples of the extraordinary SM, a grand touring car unlike anything before or since. True to Citroën’s unconventional philosophy, the SM combined dramatic styling with advanced engineering, pairing a Maserati‑designed 2.7‑liter aluminum DOHC V6 with Citroën’s gate‑shifted 5‑speed manual transmission. Its celebrated DIRAVI speed‑sensitive steering provided remarkable self‑centering. Designer Robert Opron shaped the sleek body to an impressive 0.26 drag coefficient, on European models enhanced by a glass-covered nose housing six quartz‑halogen Cibié lamps, two that turned with the wheels. This blend of innovation and elegance earned the SM the 1972 Motor Trend Car of the Year, with performance reported up to 140 mph.
At its 1970 debut, the global motoring press praised the SM, and the French affectionately nicknamed it Sa Majesté—Her Majesty. British writer Denis Jenkinson even rated it above the Dino Ferrari. In 2018, Magneto editor David Lillywhite summarized the SM’s enduring appeal: “A good SM is a phenomenal machine.” With so few built, such experiences remain rare—and unforgettable.
This 1973 Citroen SM is now represented at no reserve by a Broad Arrow Specialist with a clean Florida title in the seller’s name.
