The Oldsmobile 4-4-2 was a legendary 1960s muscle car. Originally, the name stood for a four-barrel carburetor, a four-speed manual transmission, and dual exhausts — a performance package first offered on the midsized, V8-powered 1964 F-85. Oldsmobile’s A-body lineup adopted a curvier design for 1968, 455 V8s arrived in 1970, and grille and marker light updates were made in 1971.

For 1972, the 4-4-2 returned as a Cutlass option available on hardtop, coupe, and convertible body styles. The W-29 4-4-2 Appearance and Handling Package added a heavy-duty suspension, wide wheels, a special grille and hood, and a unique exterior treatment.

Buyers could choose 350- or 455-cubic-inch engines, connected to their choice of a three-speed manual, four-speed manual, or three-speed automatic transmissions. With its sleek lines, eye-catching upgrades, and potent performance, enthusiasts snapped up nearly 10,000 W-29-equipped cars in 1972 — though some versions were more uncommon than others.

According to the seller, “this 1972 4-4-2 Convertible was purchased new by Ms Powell who owned for over 31 years while it remained in California. In the summer of 2016 it was a 41,850-mile example with a numbers-matching drivetrain when it underwent a comprehensive restoration and drivetrain rebuild in 2016, and has since been driven 16,714 miles. Refinished in the factory Sunfire Yellow and powered by a 350ci Rocket V8, it is one of only 1,171 produced in 1972 and is offered with its original build sheet and Protect-O-Plate.”
