Description

The Dodge Demon roared onto the scene in 1970, making a bold statement in Dodge’s compact performance lineup. Sharing the A-Body platform with the Plymouth Duster, the Demon was crafted as an affordable, fun-to-drive muscle car aimed at younger enthusiasts. Its fastback silhouette, unique grille, and devilish badging gave it a rebellious edge that set it apart from the crowd.

What really made the Demon stand out, though, was its value. It wasn’t just easy on the wallet at the dealership — it also dodged the high insurance premiums that plagued bigger muscle cars, thanks to its top engine staying under the 350 cubic-inch threshold that raised rates.

Under the hood, buyers had options ranging from the economical 198 and 225 cubic-inch slant-six engines to the potent 340 cubic-inch V8 in the Demon 340 model. That 340 V8 delivered 275 (gross) horsepower, giving the lightweight Demon serious street performance. With features like Rallye suspension, dual exhausts, and an available four-speed manual transmission, it was a true budget muscle machine.

As Road Test Magazine noted in April 1971, “For high performance on a budget, this Demon fit the bill nicely.”
