Description

The second-generation Camaro debuted halfway through the 1970 model year wearing a riveting European-influenced design. The long, raised hood, squared egg-crate grille, frenched-in headlights, and sloping rear deck was a major yet cohesive evolution of the previous-generation’s styling.

Camaro also boasted a revamped interior featuring a wraparound instrument cluster and deep bucket seats. The Rally Sport package enhanced the exterior with a redesigned, blacked-out front grille, a split bumper, unique lights and brightwork, and RS badging. And the Super Sport package offered a 350- or 396-cube V8 (with a special suspension for the big-block), mated to either a four-speed manual or a Turbo Hydra-matic. Also included were power-assisted disc/drum brakes, sport mirrors, wide rubber on 14x7 wheels, and SS identification. But regardless of trim level, Camaro was a well-rounded and quick performance coupe, and in August 1971, Road & Track honored it as one of the “Top Ten Best Cars in the World.”

This 1971 Camaro RS/SS underwent a full frame-off restoration. The original 350 has been upgraded to a professionally built, date-correct 402 cu-in V8 that sends power through a rebuilt TH-400 and to a beefy 8.5-inch 10-bolt rear end.

Ownership History

The consignor states, “I believe I’m the fifth owner, and I purchased it in 2015 as a roller. There are only 1,200 miles on the car since it was frame-off restored. The actual miles are unknown, it was stored for many years in pieces. This is a real RPO code Z27 and it was documented through the National Corvette Restorers Society with the original build date and original dealer. It was an original 350 cu-in V8/TH-350 car. I cloned it with a rebuilt, date-correct 402 cu-in motor and a rebuilt TH-400 transmission. This car was born silver, and we did it black with ghost stripes.”
