Description

Built to dominate NASCAR events, the Plymouth Superbird not only won eight races in the hands of Richard Petty in 1970, but became one of the most iconic NASCAR racers of all time. Built as a continuation of the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona, both it and the homologation special Superbird were the first American cars to be designed using a wind tunnel and computer analysis for improved aerodynamic performance. The Plymouth was based on the Road Runner, which offered smooth sides that helped the nose cone slice through the air. The prominent wing mounted to the trunk of the vehicle was mounted as high as to provide clean air over it, providing the most effective downforce on the rear axle. With a top speed in excess of 200 mph, these cars would go on to conquer NASCAR, so much so that the aero-cars, like the Superbird, were restricted on maximum engine size or the minimum weight was raised to decrease their natural advantages.

Ownership History

This 1970 Plymouth Superbird was purchased by the consignor's sibling in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in 1974. After driving the car for a few years, it was placed into storage in Wishek, North Dakota. The car was then relocated to Max, North Dakota, in 2002 and remained there until the current owner inherited the car in 2019.
