Description

Maserati introduced the Indy at the 1968 Turin Auto Show as a new four-seat grand tourer. Two prototypes were presented—one by Ghia and another by Carrozzeria Vignale. The production design, created by Virginio Vairo at Vignale, debuted at the 1969 Geneva Motor Show. The model was named “Indy” in recognition of Maserati’s Indianapolis 500 victories in 1939 and 1940 with Wilber Shaw’s 8CTF. The Indy combined performance with practicality, offering seating for four and luggage space while retaining Maserati’s V8 power.

The car featured a front-mounted, all-alloy 4.2-liter DOHC V8 with four Weber carburetors, paired with a ZF five-speed gearbox. It included four-wheel disc brakes, independent front suspension, and a fastback rear hatch providing approximately 18 cubic feet of storage. This example was delivered new on October 7, 1969, to Palermo, Sicily, finished in Celeste Chiaro (light blue) over blue leather. In 2015, it was acquired by a collector in Bavaria and underwent a comprehensive mechanical overhaul by HC History Car in Munich, with over €21,000 in documented servicing.

Currently finished in red with black leather, the car retains its original numbers-matching engine and Borrani wheels. Recent maintenance ensures strong performance. This Maserati represents a golden age of Italian motoring — where design, performance, and comfort were beautifully balanced priorities — backed by the unmistakable song of a high-revving Maserati V8.
