Description
Following the immediate success of the Mach 1 model upon its introduction in 1969, it would replace the Mustang GT outright in 1970. The Mach 1 was only made available in the "SportsRoof" body style – distinguished by its body style code 63C – and received a number of cosmetic and performance-oriented upgrades such as color-keyed racing mirrors, a low-gloss-finished hood with a functional scoop (when equipped with the Cobra Jet Ram-Air), and competition suspension. Engines ranged from the 351 cu-in small-block V8 to the 428 cu-in big-block "Cobra Jet" V8 with or without Ram-Air induction, producing a factory-rated 335 horsepower (but estimated to produce closer to 400 horsepower). Mustangs equipped with the Cobra Jet engine remained at the pinnacle of American street performance for the next 20 years, and well-optioned examples like the vehicle offered here continue to be eminently collectible.
