Chevrolet has long played a central role in the history of Indianapolis 500 pace cars, becoming the most frequent and iconic brand associated with the event — and in the late 1960s, the Camaro was in the spotlight. The popular pony car made its Indy debut in 1967, followed by a memorable return just two years later in ’69, when a Dover White Camaro Convertible with Hugger Orange stripes led the field for Indy's 53rd running.
Chevrolet produced 133 specially prepared Camaros for the event, including two official pace cars equipped with high-performance 396 cubic-inch V8 engines, Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 transmissions, and heavy-duty components for high-speed reliability. These replicas were used as festival and courtesy cars during Indy Speedweek. To capitalize on the excitement, Chevrolet released 3,675 pace car replicas under the Z11 Indy Sport Convertible package. These cars featured a striking white/orange color combo, and Rally Sport trim. Most were powered by a 350 cu-in V8 and Turbo Hydra-Matic 350 automatic transmission.
This 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z11 RS/SS Pace Car survivor has been in the same New York state family since new and shows 72,702 original miles.
