Description

OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE

Buick would achieve its largest production output since 1950 in 1968 (673,655 cars), thanks to an overhauled model lineup with fresh styling and powerful engine options. Among them was the Gran Sport 400 powered by, as its name implied, a 400 cu-in V8 rated at 340 horsepower. Available in Sport Coupe and Convertible body styles, the GS 400 was Buick’s answer to the Pontiac GTO – combining Buick’s upscale nature with blistering muscle car performance. The 1968 GS 400 Convertible wore Buick’s trademark “sweepspear” design cleverly molded into the body and a distinctive concave rear bumper, sitting atop a full box frame with numerous drilled lightening holes. This “Swiss cheese” chassis was only previously employed by GM on the Pontiac GTO Judge and was considered considerably more robust than the Sport Coupe’s ¾ box frame without lightening holes. A lengthy options list ensured the GS met every customer’s needs with horsepower and luxury equipment in abundance. Just 2,454 GS 400 Convertibles were built in 1968, making them highly collectible today.
