Description

Introduced for the 1968 model year, the Javelin was AMC’s entry into the rapidly expanding U.S. pony car market. AMC touted “A Mustang-Camaro-Barracuda class car, but classier; the Javelin is the roomiest 4-passenger sports hardtop of them all.” AMC managed to build 55,125 Javelins in 1968, making up approximately 20% of their overall production. Approximately 26,000 Javelins were optioned with SST (Super Sport Touring) trim, making them a desirable choice for muscle car collectors today.

This ‘68 Javelin was acquired by the seller in 1974 from its original owner, who ordered it with a 290ci 4V engine paired with a Borg-Warner T-10 four-speed manual transmission. It was also optioned with SST trim, which added reclining front bucket seats, a sports steering wheel, additional exterior trim, and SST badging. Bluetooth capability as well as an FM transmitter have been added to the car’s factory AM radio, and additional modifications include a heavy-duty aluminum radiator, a Hurst shifter, 15” American Racing wheels, and aftermarket gauges.

The seller reports that the car underwent an overhaul between 2016 and 2018 that included rebuilding the engine, replating chrome trim, converting the clock to quartz, reupholstering the interior, stripping the body to bare metal, and replacing areas of rusty metal before repainting it in its factory shade of Scarab Gold.

This 1968 AMC Javelin SST is now offered with manufacturer’s literature, repair manuals, refurbishment records, and a clean Washington State title in the seller’s name.

Additional Information

  • From the seller: “Purchased in 1974 from the original buyer and under the same ownership ever since. This restored beauty rolled off the Kenosha assembly line within the first six months of production and only 55,125 were made in her debut year. When compared to nearly 320,000 Mustangs and 235,000 Camaros, this car is quite rare. Powered by the original 290-ci V8, it is interesting to note that this car was ordered from the factory with a 4-barrel carburetor and a Borg-Warner T-10 4-speed, an unusual combination as the standard SST came standard with a three-on-the-tree. First-generation Javelins are “fun and affordable” American classics with a rich racing pedigree and style that will always stand out from the omnipresent packs of Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler pony cars”
