Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
Introduced as a standalone model in 1966, the Chevrolet Caprice became the flagship of Chevrolet’s full-size lineup, positioned above the Impala and Bel Air. The Caprice name had first appeared in 1965 as a luxury trim package for the Impala, but growing demand for premium features led Chevrolet to elevate it to its own series the following year.
The 1966 Caprice featured distinctive styling cues, including a formal roofline on the two-door hardtop, which Chevrolet called the "Sport Coupe," plus unique grille and taillight designs, as well as upscale interior appointments such as wood-grain accents and plush fabrics. Buyers could choose from a range of body styles, including a four-door hardtop, two-door hardtop, and a six- or nine-passenger station wagon.
Under the hood, the Caprice offered Chevrolet’s full spectrum of V8 engines, from the reliable 283ci small-block to the powerful 396ci and, rather unusually, the 427ci big-blocks, paired with manual or automatic transmissions. Options like air conditioning, power accessories, and AM/FM radios catered to buyers seeking comfort and convenience. The Caprice quickly established itself as Chevrolet’s answer to the growing trend of “affordable luxury,” competing with Ford’s LTD and Plymouth’s VIP.
This Los Angeles-built '66 Caprice Sport Coupe was purchased new from nearby Three-Way Chevrolet of Bakersfield, California, by Floyd Cooper. Mr. Cooper ordered the Caprice with just about everything, optioned like a GM Brass Hat car, including the rare high-performance 427ci Turbo-Jet L36 “IO” engine rated at 390 horsepower in California spec, a three-speed automatic transmission, and air conditioning. The opulence continued with Aztec Bronze paint and contrasting Cameo Beige vinyl top over a Bronze vinyl bucket seat interior. It shows approximately 91,600 miles, believed to be actual, and is in well preserved original condition throughout.
This 1966 Chevrolet Caprice Sport Coupe 427 is now represented at no reserve by a Broad Arrow Specialist with original dealer and manufacturer paperwork, a Three-Way Chevrolet license plate frame, and a clean Florida title in the current owner’s name.
