Description
The Volkswagen Beetle, officially known as the Volkswagen Type 1, is celebrated for its distinctive shape and remarkable longevity, with production spanning from 1938 to 2003. The 1965 model year brought meaningful updates that enhanced both form and function while preserving the car’s iconic charm. Available as a coupe or convertible (Cabriolet), the most noticeable change was a larger, curved windshield, which improved visibility and gave the cabin a more open feel. This was complemented by larger side and rear windows.
Inside, Volkswagen added a fuel gauge for the first time, replacing the older reserve fuel tap system. The dashboard layout was refined, and seating was upgraded with better padding and new upholstery options. Controls were repositioned for improved ergonomics, and the steering wheel received a subtle redesign.
Exterior updates included trigger-style door handles, enlarged vent windows for better airflow, and a spring-loaded engine lid latch. The convertible version, built by Karmann in Osnabrück, Germany, was produced in limited numbers. In 1965, Volkswagen sold 7,848 Beetle Convertibles in the United States, reinforcing its appeal as an affordable open-top car. As VW proudly stated in its advertising, “You don’t have to be rich to own a convertible.”
