Description

Having captured his first 24 Hours of Le Mans victory as a driver in 1959, Carroll Shelby would be forced to retire as a driver due to a possible heart condition diagnosed in 1960. Soon after retiring as a driver, he began work constructing some of the world’s most highly revered sports and racing cars. His Shelby Cobra was quickly developed into a successful racing car that dominated on tight American tracks, however, the open-cockpit design brought aerodynamic weaknesses on high-speed European circuits when compared to the sleek Ferrari 250 GTO. Determined to dethrone the prancing horse, Peter Brock led a small team in creating the first-ever Daytona Coupe prototype in a remarkable 90 days. With legendary Shelby America driver Ken Miles at the wheel, this prototype would achieve a top speed of 185 miles per hour utilizing a nearly identical roadster chassis. With only six original Daytona Coupes built, these racing cars, very similar to its relative the Cobra roadster, have inspired companies to build similar creations which seek to recapture the thrill of the original with some modern enhancements as well.
