Classic Motorsports and Grassroots Motorsports have been the go-to source for classic car and racing news, restoration stories and car video content for sports car owners and fans alike. Both publications have featured project cars series where audiences are treated to how-to restoration videos and guides, customization content, and everything else we dream about in our own garages. Like every good story, this selection of cars from the publisher’s personal collection are now ready for their next chapter.
There’s something special about a hand-assembled vehicle—especially when it’s a classic Mercedes-Benz. In 1959, Mercedes-Benz unveiled its W111 chassis, wearing a four-door body. Then in 1961, the two-door debuted. The 220 SE Coupe was distinctive and stylish: a prominent chrome grille was framed by quad headlights, a curved roofline with large windows and thin pillars led into a sloping rear deck, and a subtly curved, chrome accented beltline tied everything together. While the SE Coupe was denied the “fintail” rear fenders found on the sedan, it was adorned with additional chrome accents and more sophisticated wheel styling.
Inside, occupants relaxed in luxury: a three-piece cluster housed round and rectangular gauges, wood trim abounded, and leather upholstery sat atop thick carpet. And the driver controlled an engineering marvel with his right foot: a 2.2-liter inline-six engine topped with high-tech mechanical fuel injection. 120 horsepower was passed through either a four-speed manual, or a four-speed automatic transmission, smoothly propelling the Coupe forward.
This 1965 Mercedes-Benz 220 SE Coupe retains its stunning looks and factory 2.2-liter engine. And in the spirit of the 220 SE’s rally and touring car victories in the 1960s, this sale also includes a 182-horsepower, 2.8-liter mill and matching four-speed transmission from a Euro-spec 1979 280SL.

Ownership History
Publisher Emeritus Tim Suddard states, “Our project idea was to bolt in a much more modern twin cam, fuel injected, M110 2.8-liter engine from a 1979 European 280SL. We procured a good-running engine that came out of a daily driven car with about 100,000 miles on it. It even had a four-speed, making the swap truly bolt in. The odometer reads 80,911 miles and as the car has been sitting for decades, it is presumed to be original.”
