Ford launched the V8 Falcon Sprint at the 1963 Monte Carlo Rally, where Bo Ljungfeldt won every special test. In 1964 he placed second, losing to Hopkirk’s Mini on handicap. The results showed an American automobile could compete on the international rally scene.
This 1963 Ford Falcon Sprint, the “Falcon Flyer,” was built circa 2007 to echo the success of those historic factory Falcons. A multi-time finisher in Historic C at La Carrera Panamericana and the Chihuahua Express, it has also run the Pikes Peak Hill Climb and Silver State Classic. Race-prepped by Vintage & Historic of Los Alamitos, California, its roll cage was built to meet FMAD, VARA, HMSA, and SVRA rules at the time, and it carries a Terratrip intercom, rally computer prewiring with dual wheel sensors, and redundant ignition and fuel systems.
Blueprint Engines built the 302ci Ford V8 for rally use: 10.25:1 compression, a Holley 600 double-pumper, Isky hydraulic flat-tappet cam, and McLeod clutch, as well as the ability to run on pump gas. A Borg Warner ST10 four-speed and Hoopers-built 8-inch rear with limited-slip handle the power. Suspension features Shelby-modified A-arms, Konis, and Maico discs.
The steel body has been finished in red single-stage paint, and the black interior has a Crow harness and Autometer gauges. This successful racer was even honored with a 1/18 scale diecast model by Sun Star.
This 1963 Ford Falcon Sprint “Falcon Flyer” race car is now represented at no reserve by a Broad Arrow Specialist with a clean Texas title in the seller’s name.
