Description

During the 1950s, General Motors found itself grappling with stiff competition from foreign auto manufacturers. In response, Chevrolet's General Manager, Ed Cole, advocated for the creation of a compact car that could compete with the popular Volkswagen Beetle and later the Volkswagen Type 2 Vans. Thus, the Corvair was born. Its design was based on the Beetle's rear-mounted air-cooled engine but with a larger and more powerful six-cylinder engine. The Corvair boasted a sleek and modern look and was available in various body styles, including coupes, convertibles, sedans, station wagons, vans, and trucks, making it a versatile option for the consumer. What's more, the Corvair was one of the first American turbocharged production vehicles offering forced induction for both cars and vans. Today, the Corvair remains an enduring favorite among automotive enthusiasts, thanks to its continued availability of parts and its suitability for families.
