The Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight was the full-size flagship model of Oldsmobile since its debut in 1940. The name referred to a Series 90 fitted with an eight-cylinder engine, would have to wait until after World War II to really begin its legacy. Ultimately, the Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight, or 98 in later generations, would survive for 12 generations across six decades.

1957 marked the beginning of a short, two-year run of the Fifth generation Ninety-Eight, with complete reengineering including a three-piece rear window. All 1957 Ninety-Eight models were titled with the top-of-the-line “Starfire 98,” sharing standard features with coupes and sedans, and was the final year Starfire was used before being dropped in the 1958 model year.

This 1957 Oldsmobile Starfire 98 shows 38,789 miles, which the seller believes to be correct. It was purchased in 2022 from a private estate and has benefited from long-term ownership. The car is finished in factory-correct Onyx Black. The front and rear seats were protected by a clear vinyl cover, reportedly for decades. Under the hood is a factory 371ci/277hp Rocket V8 engine with a four-barrel carburetor connected to a Hydramatic transmission. The car is nicely-optioned and is a true time capsule of Oldsmobile’s final year of Starfire 98.
