Description
The incredibly stylish second generation of Ford’s F-Series truck line, built from 1953 to 1956, was one of the first post-war pickups to catch the eyes of collectors. But in the 1950s, ergonomics were just as important as looks to Ford. The Blue Oval reportedly spent $30 million on what may have been Detroit’s earliest application of a truck ergonomic study. The result of that study was the “Driver Engineered” cab, which was created using the “Measuring Man,” a life-size model of Average Joe Trucker.
Implemented in the 5,000-lb GVW F-100, the 7,400-lb GVW F-250, and the 8,000-lb GVW F-350 models, “Driverized” features included tall and wide door openings, “Lifeguard” safety advancements, improved control locations, sound deadener in the doors, and an even wider seat. Also new was enhanced visibility from an enlarged, one-piece windshield. And the 118-inch-wheelbase F-250 models were ready to work, with the ability to handle 522 more pounds of payload for 1956 — preferably powered by the short-stroke, 167-hp Power King Y-8 engine that was built tough for heavy jobs.
This brightly colored 1956 Ford F-250 recently underwent a full restoration. It has eight-cylinder power and a beautiful wood bed, and will handle a job site or a car show with ease.
