The 1955 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible is a quintessential example of mid-century American luxury and design innovation. As part of Cadillac’s fourth generation of the Series 62, the 1955 model year introduced refined styling, enhanced performance, and a bold presence that helped solidify Cadillac’s reputation as the “Standard of the World.”
Designed under the direction of Harley Earl, the 1955 Series 62 Convertible featured a long, low silhouette with elegant tailfins, a wide chrome grille, and wraparound windshield — hallmarks of 1950s automotive styling. The convertible body style added an extra layer of glamour, making it a favorite among celebrities and affluent buyers.
Under the hood, it was powered by a 331 cubic-inch V8 engine, producing 250 horsepower, paired with a Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. Inside, the Series 62 Convertible boasted a luxurious leather interior with a full-width bench seat and column shifter, along with options like a signal-seeking radio, power windows, and power-operated convertible top.
The automotive press loved it, and Road & Track summed it up best: “Though not a sports car, the Cadillac Convertible handles with surprising grace for its size. The Hydra-Matic transmission is seamless, and the interior is as plush as a Fifth Avenue lounge.”
