Description

International Harvester (IH) was formed in 1902 through the merger of McCormick Harvesting Machine Company, Deering Harvester Company, and three smaller firms, quickly becoming a leader in agricultural equipment. Renowned for innovation and durability, IH introduced tractors and implements tailored to farmers’ needs worldwide. Among its most iconic designs was the McCormick-Deering W series, styled by famed industrial designer Raymond Loewy.

The O-4, part of this series, was a specialized orchard tractor based on the W-4 standard model. Designed for maneuverability in tight rows, it featured a narrow profile, lowered air intake and exhaust, and smooth shielding to protect trees and vines while passing through. Powered by IH’s C152 2.5L four-cylinder gasoline engine producing 27.5 horsepower, the O-4 employed a five-speed sliding-gear transmission and rear PTO for versatility. Optional electric starter and headlights added convenience.

This restored example showcases streamlined Orchard bodywork finished in McCormick-Deering’s signature red with authentic decals, new gauges, and wiring. With a 66.75-inch wheelbase, 4,300-pound weight, and low center of gravity, it rides on Champion Guide Grip front tires and Firestone Traction Field rears for excellent stability and traction. Blending utility with timeless IH styling, this O-4 remains a classic piece of post-war agricultural design and engineering.
