Introduced in November 1938, the 1939 Mercury marked the debut of Ford’s new mid-priced division, created to bridge the gap between Ford and Lincoln. Known as the Mercury Eight Series 99A, it featured a unique body design, a longer 116-inch wheelbase, and a reinforced frame compared to Ford models. Power came from a 239-cubic-inch flathead V8 producing 95 horsepower, paired with a three-speed manual transmission. The convertible was among the most desirable body styles, with fewer than 8,000 built in this inaugural year. Positioned as a stylish yet economical alternative, Mercury offered hydraulic brakes and Zephyr-inspired styling at a competitive price.
According to the seller, “this 1939 Mercury convertible has been refinished in black, a correct color for the model year, and the paint remains in very good condition. The Mercury is well preserved, particularly the interior which is reported to be factory original and appears consistent with period specifications. The odometer displays 76,068 miles, which are believed to be original, though the title lists the mileage as exempt.” Equipment includes fog lights, wide whitewall tires, beauty trim rings, fender skirts, bumper guards, and a glove box clock. As the brochures stated, “Mercury gives you more room, more power, more comfort—at a price you can afford.”
