Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
Conceived by business partners Reid Railton and Noel Macklin, Railton automobiles combined British coachbuilt refinement with proven American engineering. Macklin, working from the former Invicta facilities on his Fairmile estate in Cobham, Surrey, envisioned a car that offered style and performance without the high costs typical of bespoke British marques. Railton—already renowned for designing record‑breaking land and water speed machines—contributed selectively to the engineering and, just as importantly, allowed his respected name to brand the new venture.
Macklin chose the lively Hudson Terraplane chassis as his starting point, later transitioning to the more powerful Hudson Eight. By 1935, Railton cars employed Hudson’s 4.2‑liter straight‑eight engine, which delivered impressive acceleration and smoothness, helping position the Railton among the quickest touring cars of its day.
One of the most attractive models of 1935 was the Railton Eight Victoria Coupe bodied by Ranalah of London. Ranalah’s lightweight, stylish coachwork complemented the robust American mechanicals and embodied the Railton philosophy of strong performance at a competitive price. With seating for four in a graceful two‑door design, the Victoria Coupe captured the brand’s Anglo‑American character.
A total of 1,379 Railton Eights of all body styles were produced before Macklin sold the company to Hudson, making surviving Victoria Coupes notably rare today. This lovely 1935 Railton Eight Victoria Coupe by Ranalah is now represented at no reserve by a Broad Arrow Specialist with a clean New York title.
