The Nethercutt Collection is one of America’s finest Automotive Museums and Collections, a masterpiece comprising over 250 perfectly restored American and European motor cars, along with a vast array of rare mechanical musical instruments and precious antique furniture. 

Maintaining a classic car collection of this size is never easy, and when it reaches the scale of our collection, it becomes increasingly more challenging. Our founder, J.B. Nethercutt said the following at age 91, “The recognition and preservation of beauty has been a major focus of my life. It would suit me well if what people remembered about me was, ‘Where he went, he left beauty behind.’” 

As a result, we have decided to part ways with a small group of cars from the collection and will do so in partnership with our friends at Hagerty Marketplace. Many of the cars we have decided to sell we have owned for in excess of 50 years, or have been in storage, not on display, or represent a tremendous opportunity as a restoration project. They are a compelling mix of pre-war examples that have been thoroughly well-cared for and that will easily find new caretakers who will undoubtedly cherish and use them as intended.  

As we say goodbye to this group of cars, we hope the occasion for their sale will introduce us to new collectors and enthusiasts, and we look forward to hosting you at the Museum and Collection in Sylmar, California, in the coming months, years and decades.

Henry Martin Leland is inextricably linked as the brilliant engineer who founded Cadillac. He, too, was the founder of Lincoln. His cars were brilliantly engineered, though rather conservative in appearance and fastidious in detail. It would be Leland’s undoing. On February 4, 1922, Ford Motor Company bought the Lincoln Motor Company for $8 million. . . Leland departed just four months later.    

Locke & Co., Inc., was one of many coachbuilders in New York City. It operated from 1903-1932 as well as from Rochester, New York, from 1926-1932. Locke was one of Lincoln’s preferred coachbuilders offering cataloged models as well as full-customs of the buyer’s choosing. The Model 165 Club Roadster was classified as a standard catalog model for 1928. Designed by Locke, Lincoln produced 367 in its own body plant for 1928; a total of 600 during the car’s 30-month run.   

The buyer had a choice of Disteel wheels, wood artillery wheels, or wire wheels at no extra cost. Most were fitted with rumble seats, though a trunk version was also available. The roomy interior offered luggage space behind the seats. This particular example was a late-model offering as evidenced by its cowl lights. Despite being termed a roadster, roll-up windows in the doors were included.

Ownership History     This car was owned and restored by Anthony Heinsbergen, the man responsible for designing and building the Nethercutt Collection’s San Sylmar building back in 1972.  This Lincoln was also once part of the renowned Harrah Collection in Reno, Nevada. Car Show Wins: 1959 CCCA Far West Grand Classic - 89-3/4 points (Heinsbergen)
