Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
Charles Griffin’s lifelong love affair with American cars began at sixteen when he restored a dusty blue Studebaker. The passion he had for that car followed him through the rest of his life. Over the years, the scale of his garage and projects grew in step with his love for cars. Ultimately, Charles built his own restoration paradise, complete with a paint room, body shop, show room and features that most gearheads only dream about. His sanctuary became a second home to his family and friends. The selection of fine automobiles offered here represents the passion, drive, and memories that Charles shared. Hagerty Marketplace is honored to present the Griffin Collection, offered entirely without reserve.

The 1917 Studebaker 4-40 Three-Passenger Roadster was part of Studebaker’s Series 18 lineup, a collection of vehicles that reflected the company’s growing reputation for quality and innovation during the brass-era of American motoring. This particular model, often referred to as the Model 4-40, was powered by a four-cylinder engine and designed for agility, economy, and style. With a wheelbase of 112 inches, the roadster was compact yet comfortable, offering seating for three. The engine produced around 40 horsepower, which, combined with its three-speed manual transmission and relatively light weight, made it a nimble and responsive car for its time.
The 1917 roadster was priced at approximately $940, making it more affordable than its $1,180 six-cylinder sibling, the Model 6-50. Its open-top design and sporty proportions appealed to younger drivers and those seeking a more personal driving experience. 1917 Studebaker Roadster was an offering that blended performance, elegance, and reliability—qualities that helped Studebaker maintain its competitive edge during the rapidly evolving automotive boom of the 1910s.
