Description

Ransom Eli Olds may not be a household name today, but his Curved Dash Oldsmobile was a landmark in early motoring. Introduced in 1901, the lightweight runabout was simple, affordable, and cleverly designed for mass production using standardized parts. Its horizontal single-cylinder engine produced 7 horsepower, driving the rear axle through a two-speed planetary transmission and chain drive. Steering was by tiller, and the body featured a two-passenger bench seat, leather buggy top, and optional kerosene lamps. Priced at $650, the Curved Dash quickly became America’s first commercially successful car, with thousands built through 1907.

This 1903 Oldsmobile Model R Curved Dash is an exceptional example, showing why 4,000 were produced that year. Finished in period-correct black with red accents and gold coach lines, it exudes charm and authenticity. Details include offset-spoke wood wheels with natural rubber tires, a button-tufted leather seat, and the original serial numbers are said to be matching on the decompression pedal and engine. The engine and drivetrain are said to run well, with an electric starter added for convenience. As a pre-1905 vehicle, it is also eligible for dating inspection by the V.C.C. to allow entry into events like the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run.
