First released in 1985 as a military-only High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, the civilian H1 version of the Humvee didn't roll off the production line until 1992. The four-passenger, go-anywhere Humvee — built by AM General, a division of American Motors — was designed to ford rivers up to 2.5 feet deep, bust through snow drifts, conquer the softest of sand dunes, and climb the highest mountains.  The Humvee boasts a military design, with a wide and boxy frame, high ground clearance, round headlights, a sloped hood, and utilitarian yet spacious cabin. Under the hood was a powerful 6.5-liter Detroit Diesel V8 engine with later versions turbocharged. Early models were mated to a GM TH400/3L80 three-speed automatic transmission, while later Humvees received a GM 4L80-E four-speed automatic. The Humvee's drive line is protected via a network of tubes running the length of the truck, preventing obstacles from harming any of its critical components. The Humvee was available in various body styles, including the four-door hardtop pickup with spacious cargo bed, a wagon, and a soft top.  This military 2006 AM General Humvee Four-Door Hardtop Pickup features the 6.5-liter Turbo Diesel V8, four-speed automatic, and famed all-wheel-drive system, including a two-speed transfer case with torque-biasing differential.
