First released in 1985 as a military-only High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), the troop-toting Humvee was designed for extreme durability and off-road performance. It wasn’t until 1992 that the civilian version—the Hummer H1—hit the market, thanks in large part to Hollywood action legend Arnold Schwarzenegger, who famously lobbied AM General to produce a street-legal variant after seeing the Humvee in action during Desert Storm.

The civilian-spec H1 retained its military-grade toughness with a wide, boxy stance, high ground clearance, and utilitarian slab-sided design.
