Description
“American-made sports cars get no respect, especially in Europe... the ZR-1 would change that attitude,” wrote Road & Track Magazine. The 1990 Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 marked an audacious leap in American performance engineering. Developed in collaboration with Lotus, then owned by General Motors, the ZR-1 featured the revolutionary LT5 engine — a 5.7-liter DOHC V8 producing 375 horsepower. Built by Mercury Marine in Oklahoma, the LT5 gave the ZR-1 supercar-level performance, with a 0–60 mph time under 5 seconds and a top speed exceeding 170 mph.
To handle the power, the ZR-1 received a unique wider rear body, upgraded brakes, and the FX3 adjustable suspension system. Tires are 315/35ZR17 rear which are unique to the ZR-1, with 275/40ZR17 up front. It also introduced the “valet key,” which limited engine output for everyday driving. Priced at nearly double the base Corvette the ZR-1 earned the nickname “King of the Hill.” Only 3,049 units were produced in 1990, and the ZR-1 remained in production through 1995, with incremental improvements.
This first-year “King” recalls the excitement the ZR-1’s debut caused. It has seen minimal use over the years and now resides in Maryland displaying less than 4,300 miles. It is sold on a clear Maryland title.
