The 1990 Chevrolet Corvette represented a significant refinement of the C4 generation, blending performance upgrades with notable design and safety enhancements. While the overall silhouette remained familiar, several key changes distinguished the 1990 model.

Most notably, 1990 was the debut year for the Corvette ZR-1, a high-performance variant developed in collaboration with Lotus and powered by a 5.7-liter DOHC LT5 V8 engine producing 375 horsepower. Standard Corvette coupes and convertibles continued with the L98 5.7-liter V8, rated at 245 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque, paired with either a six-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.

One of the most visible updates was the redesigned dashboard. The digital-heavy instrument cluster of earlier C4s was replaced with a more driver-focused layout that combined analog gauges with digital readouts, improving readability and ergonomics. The center stack was also reconfigured for better access to climate and audio controls.

A major safety advancement came with the introduction of a driver-side airbag, a first for the Corvette. This required a redesigned steering wheel and contributed to a more modern interior feel. Additionally, anti-lock brakes were now standard equipment. All this led to Chevrolet boasting, “Corvette has captured Car and Driver’s 10 Best honors for five years.”
