Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
An affordable mid-engine sports car? Sounds more like a dream than reality, but the Toyota MR2 fulfilled that wish. At the 1983 Tokyo motor show Toyota displayed to the world its SV-3 concept, a thinly disguised preview of what would become, a year later, the MR2 (Mid-engine, Rear-wheel-drive, 2-seater). The company had been taking the matter of driving fun very seriously and its development team was able to bring in Dan Gurney, the successful Formula One and sports car racer, to fine-tune the responses of Toyota’s new road car, even if it was based on humble Corolla origins. That 1587cc AE86 four-cylinder engine features a 16-valve cylinder head, Denso electronic fuel injection, and a variable intake system. It was quite advanced for the time, and the result was 112 hp and the ability to rev beyond 7000rpm. The MR2 was Motor Trend Import Car of the Year for 1985 for a reason — with the engine mounted transversely, riding on MacPherson strut suspension and four-wheel ABS disc brakes, the MR2 performed far above its price.
Offered by the original owner, this treasured 1986 Toyota MR2 is a reminder the dream mid-engine sports car can be reality.
