Description

The 1986 Pontiac Fiero GT marked a turning point for Pontiac’s ambitious mid-engine sports car. Originally launched in 1984 as a fuel-efficient commuter car, the Fiero evolved into a true performance vehicle by '86. The GT model featured a sleek fastback design that distinguished it from earlier notchback styles and gave it a more exotic, European-inspired look.

Under the hood, the Fiero GT was equipped with a 2.8-liter V6 engine producing 140 horsepower, paired with manual or automatic transmission. This powertrain, combined with a sport-tuned suspension, offered significantly improved handling and acceleration over the base models. The car’s mid-engine layout provided balanced weight distribution, enhancing its cornering capabilities.

“Let’s make it official," Road & Track wrote of the GT. "The debate is over. The Fiero isn’t just a nice, two-seat commuter car anymore. It’s a world-class sports car ... [It] almost seems to have an intuitive sense of what you want it to do.”

This red-painted 1986 Pontiac Fiero GT comes from the estate of its longtime owner and was ordered with numerous factory options, including a sunroof, rear spoiler, air conditioning, cruise control, and power sport mirrors. However, the car has been in storage and does not start.

Ownership History

The accompanying CARFAX Vehicle History Report places this 1986 Pontiac Fiero GT in Arizona. The abbreviated report begins on 13 May 1996 with 65,000 miles showing. The car was purchased by its longtime owner in 2003 and is being sold by his brother on behalf of his estate.

The seller notes, "Regarding the mileage report in CARFAX, the inspector missed the leading 1 on the odometer, incorrectly reporting the mileage as 45,097 instead of 145,097."

The seller further states, “This car was owned by my late brother, a Pontiac enthusiast and member of the Pontiac Oakland Club International. He owned two other classic Pontiacs. He bought this car from another Arizona owner, and he usually kept it covered at his home in Arizona. The car has been parked for a few years and currently will not start. It will turn over and will fire when given starting fluid. There are some interior flaws such as cracked or missing panels and a few loose wires. One of the headlights sometimes sticks when opening or closing. There is also a gap in the rear edge of the sunroof, which could let water leak in. The tires are probably aged out."
