Description
When the Datsun 280Z bowed out in 1978, it marked the end of an era for Nissan’s iconic S30 platform. To commemorate the final year of production, Nissan released a limited Black Pearl Edition—an exclusive trim offered to U.S. dealers with striking black paint, red and silver accent stripes, and sport mirrors. Only around 1,500 examples were produced, making it one of the rarest and most collectible variants of the 280Z.
This 1978 Datsun 280Z Black Pearl Edition is a well-preserved and historically significant example of the final-year S30. Originally delivered to Puyallup Datsun in Washington, it remained with its first owner until 2016 and now shows just 19,470 miles. The car was featured in the January 2009 issue of Hemmings Sports & Exotics and spent time on display at the Datsun Heritage Museum in Murrieta, California, before being acquired by the current owner via Bring a Trailer in June 2020.
Repainted in its factory-correct Black Pearl Metallic (638) finish, this car retains its original character while showcasing a clean, stripe-free exterior—an intentional choice by the current owner that emphasizes the sleekness of the paint. While some purists may prefer the original stripe kit, it can be easily reapplied to restore the factory look.
