Description

The luxurious Volkswagen Type 2 23-window Samba was a beloved variant of VW’s iconic microbus, originally designed for touring the Alps. Known for its panoramic windows, split windshield, and skylights, the Samba embodied postwar optimism and freedom. Though the 23-window design was discontinued in 1963, enthusiasts are known to convert their Type 2s to re-create the 23-window experience, as seen here.

By '74, the Volkswagen Type 2 had moved to a single-piece curved windshield, and the more utilitarian Kombi typically lacked the deluxe features of earlier models — no skylights and fewer chrome details. But that didn't stop the ambitious builder of this Samba conversion, which was originally manufactured as a Kombi in Brazil and then customized there before the seller imported it to the U.S. earlier this year.

This type 2 now possesses all of the comforts and characteristics of a Samba, right down to the 23-window design with prominent split windshield and skylights. Painted in two-tone bright red and cream paint, it also features two-tone vinyl upholstery, carpet, and door panels, along with retro red gingham curtains, a sunroof, and two roof racks. This 23-window conversion recently won "Best In Show" at the 31st Annual Memories Classic Car Cruise in Indiana. It is now offered with a clean Michigan title in the seller’s name.

Ownership History

The Michigan seller imported this Type 2 from Brazil earlier this year, following the aforementioned 23-window conversion and refurbishment. The seller says the Type 2 has “plenty of space for cruising, camping, or weekend shows. Clean, smoke-free engine that runs strong and smooth.” It is offered with a clean Michigan title in the seller’s name.
