The Dodge Demon made a bold entrance into Dodge’s compact performance lineup in 1970. Built on the A-Body platform along with the Plymouth Duster, it was designed as a sporty, budget-friendly muscle car aimed squarely at younger drivers. With its aggressive fastback roofline, distinctive grille, and devil-themed badging, the Demon stood out from the crowd. But what really made it appealing was its affordability — not just at the dealership, but also when it came to insurance, as even the top-tier engine stayed under the 350 cubic-inch limit that triggered high insurance premiums for muscle cars.
Under the hood, the Demon offered a range of engines, from the fuel-efficient 198 and 225 cu-in slant-sixes to the high-performance 340 cu-in V8 found in the Demon 340 model. That 340 V8 cranked out 275 horsepower, giving the lightweight Demon serious street cred. Performance features included Rallye suspension, dual exhausts, and an optional four-speed manual transmission.
As Road Test Magazine put it in April 1971, “For high performance on a budget, this Demon fit the bill nicely.” Still, the early ’70s brought shifting market trends, and despite its strengths, Dodge eventually dropped the Demon name, rebranding the car as the less-potent Dart Sport.
This particular 1971 Demon originally came with the 225 slant-six engine, but it now packs a 360 “LA” V8 punch and a host of performance upgrades.

Ownership History
The consignor of this 1971 Dodge Demon has owned it since 2021.
The rear of the vehicle is from a Duster. The correct rear plate can be purchased and the correct taillights (included) installed. The vehicle is titled a Demon and has the dash and vin plate (riveted to the dash) of a Demon as well as body plate (screwed onto inner fender). Since the current owner purchased it in the configuration, we do not know exactly how this came to be but believe the Duster was a donor car for a rebuild of the Demon that was not completed.
