Description
The Volkswagen Karmann-Ghia (Type 14) is a true vintage classic that perfectly combines the simplicity of the Volkswagen Beetle’s mechanics with the sleek, stylish Italian-designed bodywork. Known for its unique design, the Karmann-Ghia was produced by Volkswagen from 1955 to 1974, featuring Italian-inspired aesthetics by Carrozzeria Ghia and German construction by coachbuilder Karmann. The Karmann Ghia’s body panels were butt-welded, hand-shaped, and smoothed with English pewter in a time-consuming process commensurate with higher-end manufacturers.
The 1968 model year brought several updates. It featured a slightly more powerful 1.5-liter flat-four engine producing around 53 horsepower, improving performance modestly. Safety enhancements were also introduced, including energy-absorbing steering columns and improved lighting, aligning with new U.S. regulations. The body retained its iconic curves and low-slung profile, with subtle refinements to bumpers and lighting.
Available as both a coupe and a convertible (Cabriolet), it appealed to drivers seeking a fun, versatile driving experience. The extensive network of Volkswagen dealers and workshops, coupled with today's numerous aftermarket suppliers, has ensured the Karmann-Ghia’s enduring popularity. This classic sporting VW, especially restored Cabriolet examples like this, remains a favorite among collectors and enthusiasts for its blend of reliable performance, stylish design, and ease of maintenance.
