Description
Designed by legendary Mercedes-Benz stylist Paul Bracq and engineer Béla Barényi, the W113 series—affectionately known as the “Pagoda”—debuted in 1963 as a replacement for both the 190SL and 300SL. Its nickname stems from the unique concave shape of the removable hardtop, which not only added visual distinction but also improved structural rigidity and safety. The W113 was the first SL to feature a safety body with a rigid passenger cell and designated crumple zones, reflecting Mercedes-Benz’s pioneering approach to automotive safety. Over its production run until 1971, the Pagoda evolved through the 230SL, 250SL, and 280SL variants, each offering a refined blend of performance, comfort, and timeless design.
This 1966 Mercedes-Benz 230SL is a prime example of the model’s enduring appeal. Finished in its original Dark Bordeaux Red (DB-573) over Black Leather (Code 201), it captures the understated elegance that defines the Pagoda. Powered by the M127 2.3-liter inline-six-cylinder engine with Bosch mechanical fuel injection, the 230SL delivers a factory-rated 170 horsepower, paired with an uncommon four-speed manual transmission for an engaging and authentic driving experience. This Pagoda SL is now offered with a color-matched hardtop, service and maintenance records, owner's manuals, and a clean Virginia title in the current owner's name.

Ownership History
This 1966 Mercedes-Benz 230 SL was imported to the United States and is believed to have remained in Williamsburg, Virginia, since its purchase on February 21, 1975. At the time of acquisition, the vehicle reportedly had a replacement “short block” engine installed—this may be verifiable via the engine serial number. In 1979, the exterior was professionally refurbished in its original factory color. Since then, the car has seen limited use.
The seller notes that some major mechanical work has been completed over the years, and the engine compartment presents as consistent with the car’s age (see detailed photos). The seller notes the vehicle provides “one of life's finest automotive experiences.”
