Description
The 1962 Plymouth Fury Hardtop marked a pivotal moment in American automotive history, especially in the evolution of muscle cars. Built on Chrysler’s new B-body platform, the Fury was lighter and more agile than its predecessors and its competition. Midway through the model year, Plymouth introduced the Super Stock 413 Max Wedge package, transforming the Fury into a drag strip weapon. This high-performance variant featured a 413 cubic inch V8 with dual four-barrel carburetors, producing up to 420 horsepower, depending on compression ratio.
Though overshadowed by the 1964 Pontiac GTO in popular lore, the Fury Max Wedge arguably launched the muscle car era two years earlier. It was designed for competition, with features like “Ram’s Horn” exhaust manifolds, cross-ram intake, and Chrysler’s indestructible TorqueFlite 727 automatic transmission, which gave it a clear edge on the drag strip.
These cars were dominant in the early days of NHRA competition, laying the foundation for Mopar’s storied drag racing heritage. In 1962, just 57 Fury Super Stock Hardtops were produced, making them exceptionally rare and highly collectible today. This 1962 Plymouth Fury Hardtop captures the spirit of those legendary Max Wedge racers—reimagined for the street, yet true to its racing roots.
