Description
The 1960 Volkswagen “Type 2” or Microbus, was part of VW’s second-generation utility lineup. Known for its distinctive split windshield and rounded body, the 11-window configuration offered practicality for families and businesses alike. Powered by an air-cooled 1,192cc flat-four engine producing around 30 horsepower, it featured rear-wheel drive and a simple, durable design. Its spacious interior and versatile layout made it a favorite among tradesmen and later an icon of the 1960s counterculture movement. Today, the 1960 Type 2 remains highly collectible for its charm, engineering simplicity, and role in shaping van life history.
This 1960 11-window Bus is finished in light gray and was originally a Volkswagen parts bus from Maryland before undergoing a refurbishment in the early 2000s. Reportedly garage-kept for the past 20 years, power comes from an upgraded 1,600cc flat-four paired with a Freeway Flyer four-speed manual transmission and a 12-volt electrical system. Additional features include Sekurit glass, replaced window rubber, and an interior camper kit with maroon upholstery, Z-bed, table, and a jump seat. Recent servicing in September 2025 included an engine tune-up and brake overhaul with new wheel cylinders and shoes.
This 11-window Type 2 is now offered with service records, the removed middle seat, window curtains, and current New York registration in the seller’s name.

Additional Information
From the seller, “This is my first split-window bus after restoring a series of early Beetle and bay window projects. The complete restoration of this vehicle allowed for many epic, 55 mile-per-hour camping adventures, and was a catalyst for me founding the Volkswagen Traffic Jam on Governor’s Island in New York where the bus made annual appearances.”
This Volkswagen is registered in a state that does not issue titles for vehicles of its age. It is offered with New York registration.
