“Allstate Cruisaire—deluxe scooter with European styling and American dependability.” The 1959 Allstate Cruisaire was a product of a unique collaboration between Italy’s Piaggio and America’s retail giant Sears, Roebuck and Company. In 1952, Sears began importing Vespa scooters from Italy’s Piaggio and selling them as the Allstate Cruisaire. The Allstate Vespas were essentially rebranded versions of Piaggio’s Vespa 125 models, slightly modified to meet U.S. market preferences and cost considerations.
The 1959 model featured a 123.7 cc two-stroke engine producing around 4.5 horsepower, with a top speed of about 45 mph. It had a three-speed manual transmission and a monocoque steel frame, which gave it both strength and a sleek, enclosed look. Unlike its Italian counterparts, the Allstate Cruisaire often lacked certain refinements—such as a front suspension dampener or a speedometer in early models—to keep costs low, though the deluxe Super Cruisaire was closer to the Vespa spec.
Stylistically, the Allstate Cruisaire retained the iconic Vespa silhouette but included unique touches like a handlebar-mounted headlight and simplified badging. “Available through Sears stores or direct from our catalog — delivered to your door,” the Allstate Cruisaire brought European scooter culture to American suburbs, helping to popularize scooters as practical and fashionable urban transport.
