Description
The Fiat 600 Series 1 made its world debut at the March 1955 Geneva Motor Show, proving that even a humble family car could embody La Dolce Vita — the sweet life, Italian style.
Engineered by Dante Giacosa, the 600 addressed postwar Italy’s pressing need for affordable personal transport, when car ownership was still rare among working families. Compact and rear‑engined, it used a 633cc water‑cooled four‑cylinder making about 21 horsepower when new, well-suited to crowded cities and twisting mountain roads.
A transverse front leaf spring and coil‑sprung semi‑trailing rear arms handled suspension, with drum brakes at all four corners. The simple interior featured vinyl seating, matching door panels, and rubber flooring. Despite being under ten feet long, it seated four comfortably. Inexpensive and economical to run, the 600 helped power Italy’s miracolo economico (economic miracle), mobilizing millions and reshaping everyday life across the nation.
This first-year Fiat 600 is said to have been originally delivered in Italy and later imported to the U.S. before relocating to Canada, where it is currently located. It also is said to have been repainted a few years ago.
Showing under 60,250 km (about 37,500 miles), this 1955 Fiat 600 Series 1 now offered by the selling dealer in Canada with Ontario registration.
