On August 1, 1923 — dubbed “Buick Day” — the 1924 models were unveiled, marking a significant moment in the automaker’s history. Among them was the new Standard Six, designed to be more affordable than the upscale Master Six, appealing to the growing middle class. Built on General Motors’ A platform, it shared its foundation with Oldsmobile, Oakland, and Chevrolet models. With a 114.5-inch wheelbase, the Standard Six offered a smooth, stable ride, while its updated styling — featuring a contoured radiator shell and more pronounced fenders — gave it a refined, almost Packard-like appearance that reportedly raised eyebrows at Packard.
Under the hood, the Standard Six boasted a larger “valve-in-head” six-cylinder engine, thanks to a longer stroke, improved compression, and better airflow. Buick was one of the few automakers at the time using overhead valve technology. Another outstanding innovation was its four-wheel braking system, the result of two and a half years of development and 150,000 miles of testing.
One of the most notable models in the lineup, the 25S Sport Touring, was produced from 1925 to 1928 as part of the Series 20. In 1925 alone, Buick sold nearly 200,000 vehicles, securing its place as the sixth-largest automaker in America — and it’s easy to see why.
