Rarely is an automobile that’s called “all new” truly that. Even America’s sports car, Chevrolet’s Corvette, carried over drivetrains and other components from one generation to the next. Not the fifth-generation C5 Corvette! Released in 1997, the C5 was the most radically new Corvette since the model’s debut in 1953. The new C5 was both lighter and stiffer than the C4 thanks to hydroformed frame rails. Drive-by-wire throttle and variable effort power steering were other new features. Add to this the 346 cu-in all-aluminum “LS1” V8 engine producing 345 horsepower, undoubtedly one of the best V8 engines ever created. The LS1 could be mated to a new Borg-Warner T-56 six-speed manual transaxle, a $825 option, though two-thirds of buyers preferred the standard automatic. Motor Trend called the C5 “The first-ever no excuses ’Vette” and the public agreed.
