One look and you knew it was a Firebird. The word you often hear in the highly secretive halls of the GM Design building is “reach,” that hard-to-define ability to create something fresh and new, yet have it carry enough design clues to make it instantly recognizable. In 1993, they nailed it again when the fourth generation of Firebird was introduced with a sleek composite body that never rusts. And while base models were equipped with a V6 engine, while Formula and Trans Am models received the 5.7-liter LT1 V8 engine shared with the C4 Corvette. In 1996 the LT1 engine received a boost in horsepower to 285.

In past generations, the Formula could approximate Trans Am performance, but it lacked the Trans Am’s suspension and aero package. Now the lines were more blurred, with the pricier Trans Am only offering a unique front fascia, a larger rear spoiler, and some minor trim. Just 326 Formula convertibles were built in 1997, much rarer than the T/A. With LT1 power and the wind in your hair, this uncommon 1997 Firebird Formula convertibles is, as Motor Trend called it: “… pure American muscle-car at its finest.”
