Description

In 1992, Chevrolet began converting the two-ton, tame B-body Caprice into a modern-day performance icon — unveiled in 1994 as the Impala SS. GM designers had revised the Caprice’s rear wheel opening and rear quarter glass, integrated a rear spoiler, added a single-bar front grille and unique badges, and painted the body a sinister black.

The contemporary Corvette’s powerful LT1 V8 was dropped in, backed by a four-speed automatic and a limited-slip rear end. The suspension featured the Police Package Caprice’s springs and stabilizer bars along with monotube shocks. And larger brakes were fitted beneath 17-inch alloy wheels. The Impala SS may have been big, but it was also dead serious about performance.

It got even better in 1995 with revised rear window and mirror styling, along with the addition of Dark Green Gray and Dark Cherry colors. And the final-year 1996 Impala SS was the best of the breed with a new analog dashboard and floor shifter that vibed with its 14-second quarter-mile performance. Car and Driver concluded, “At the drag strip, our Impala SS made its forebears proud…a V-8 growl that sounds as lusty as a big-block with dual quads.”

Showing less than 38,000 total miles, this 1996 Impala SS was sold new in Canada before being brought to the US in late 2025. It is believed to remain stock throughout.
