The AM General M998 HMMWV is a direct link between U.S. military engineering and civilian automotive culture. Originally developed in the late 1970s, the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) — commonly called the Humvee — was designed to replace multiple light military vehicles with one rugged, adaptable platform. The M998, the base cargo and troop carrier variant, became the backbone of U.S. and allied ground forces.
In 1993, vehicles like this one were delivered under U.S. Department of Defense contracts and featured unmatched off‑road capability, portal axles, and a wide stance for stability and ground clearance. Public exposure during the Gulf War made the HMMWV an icon of modern warfare, and its popularity inspired AM General to offer a civilian counterpart (known commercially as the Hummer H1).
