Starting in the 1990 model year, the Lumina was the Bowtie brand's midsized, front-wheel-drive sedan and coupe, the Z34 being the sportiest version of the first-generation examples. With a unique appearance package and specs comparable to the Taurus SHO, the Lumina Z34 was a standout choice for the GM enthusiast.

Z34 equipped cars received model-specific lower bodywork, grille, rear spoiler, vented hood, and model badging. Interior appointments included gray cloth upholstery, front sport seats, power windows, air conditioning, and a Delco Bose cassette radio. The 3.4L LQ1 V6 engine was factory rated at 200 horsepower and 215 lb-ft. of toque, and sport-tuned suspension with revised spring rates, front and rear sway bars, four-wheel disc brakes, and 16” alloy wheels came standard.
