Description
The 1990 Jeep Grand Wagoneer marked one of the final years of production for the iconic full-size luxury SUV, which had been in continuous production since 1963. Built on the rugged SJ platform, the Grand Wagoneer was known for its classic woodgrain exterior paneling, plush interior, and off-road capability. By 1990, it was produced under Chrysler, which had acquired American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1987.
This model year featured a 5.9-liter (360 cu-in) V8 engine paired with a three-speed automatic transmission and full-time four-wheel drive. It came well-equipped with amenities such as leather seats, air conditioning, power windows, and a premium sound system — luxuries that were rare in SUVs at the time. The 1990 edition also included refinements like improved sound insulation and updated trim options.
Only 6,449 units were produced in 1990, making it a relatively rare model year. The Grand Wagoneer’s blend of ruggedness and refinement helped define the luxury SUV segment and left a lasting legacy that continues to influence Jeep’s modern vehicles. As Road & Track magazine wrote at the time, “Though its underpinnings date back decades, the Grand Wagoneer continues to deliver a unique blend of ruggedness and refinement. It’s the Range Rover for the American heartland.”
