Description
When Wolfgang Möbius designed the Porsche 928 for its 1977 debut, he helped steer the brand into bold new territory. Unlike the rear-engine 911, the 928 was a front-engine grand tourer, powered initially by a 4.5-liter water-cooled V8 paired with either a manual or automatic transaxle. Its aluminum body panels, sleek lines, and pop-up headlights gave it a futuristic look, while its low drag coefficient made it ideal for high-speed cruising. Inside, the innovation continued with a driver-focused cockpit, featuring an adjustable instrument cluster and a center console angled toward the driver. The 2+2 seating layout with folding rear seats enhanced practicality. In 1983, Porsche introduced the 928 S into the U.S. market, which brought sharper styling, front and rear spoilers, and a refined 4.7-liter engine. The 928 S4 arrived in late 1986, with the 1988 model boasting a more powerful 5.0-liter 316-hp V8, while its rounded front fascia and integrated rear spoiler gave it a more modern, aerodynamic profile. Car and Driver wrote of the S4. “We’ll confidently state that the Porsche 928 is better at fulfilling its role than almost any car we can think of. It is a true grand touring car... equally at home in traffic or at triple-digit speeds.”
