Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
On 10 March 1987, the headline in The Washington Post read: “Chrysler to Buy American Motors.” The story continued, “Chrysler Corp. yesterday announced plans to buy American Motors Corp. for a total of more than $1.5 billion in a deal that would reduce to three the number of home-grown U.S. car manufacturers.” The object of Chrysler’s desires: AMC’s Jeep division.
One of those desirable Jeeps was the top-of-the-line Jeep Grand Wagoneer, which became the America’s first dedicated luxury SUV. The body dated from 1963, but recent upgrades included rectangular taillights and AMC’s robust 360 cu-in V8 as standard. Part time shift-on-the-fly four-wheel drive was standard too (this is a Jeep after all). Plus, a luxurious leather interior and faux wood body trim added an air of elegance no other vehicle could match at the time.
A 24 August 2021 Hagerty Media story titled “5 Cars That Smashed Our Price Guide at Monterey Car Week 2021” tells the story of the rise in Grand Wagoneer values. Forget those very common Cadillac Escalades, here’s an opportunity to own an original condition Garnet Red 1987 Jeep Grand Wagoneer.
